When furniture maker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi designed a chair in 1807, he never could have imagined the design would still grace some of the most important buildings in the world, including the White House.

Chiavari is a small, seaside town in northwest Italy. Just before the turn of the 19th century, the Descalzi Brothers furniture and cabinet making shop opened. At the behest of a local ruler, Descalzi was asked to design a chair off a French design.
He came up with the simple, yet elegant Chiavari chair. The chair became a favorite of European royalty and led to a boom of chair-making factories in the city.
